These are a few...
I have been feeling rather down and out lately, so today I thought I’d cheer myself up by writing about some things that make me very, very happy in this world. For your consideration, in no particular order…
My love for being snuggly and warm inside a blanket goes way beyond the practical. They are so soft, so fuzzy, and so comfy. I can’t really sleep without being curled up inside of one. Hot outside? Turn on the fan and use the blanket anyway. My current favorite is a gigantic gray microfiber- blankets must be long enough to cover from chin to feet. Pillows are pretty great too : )
I think this stems from my parents’ habit of waking up at 6am, and spending a glorious half hour in silence, drinking coffee and reading the paper, before they got ready for work. Though I was NOT one for waking up early and savoring anything before school (I used to humiliate my sister by running from the parking lot to get to class on time), something about those calm morning moments stuck with me. As an adult, my morning coffee is a tradition that is equal parts smell, taste, and waking-up ritual.
3. Food. Aside from coffee, there are a great many things I love about food. I love the social aspect of gathering friends for a meal. I love savoring something intensely delicious as slowly as possible. I love when a treat is perfect for the mood, like an ice cream cone on an especially hot afternoon. If I tried to list all my favorite foods, this post would be a novella.
4. Travel. I love new places, new people, new experiences. I love hearing a foreign language spoken around me, and walking on old streets that have been traversed by many other feet. I love picking out the local vocabulary words, the hints of a dialect, even the differences in traffic signage. Places on my bucket list: more of Europe (always), Canada, South America, Australia.
5. These guys.
Meet my nephews, Rocky and Rambo. It’s really a wonder I haven’t introduced them before. Though they live 1,000 miles away in Florida, a Facetime call with these two always cheers me up (They can recognize my voice, but they don’t understand my face on the screen, so they go crazy!). They are rambunctious, lovable, and have more distinct personalities than most people I know.
Living in a small apartment, I am the perfect candidate for a Kindle, but I have resisted thus far. I have been known to read the back of a cereal box at breakfast for lack of other, more stimulating, reading material. I will carry a 1,000 page hardcover book in my tote bag for weeks. I love the feel of the pages, the way they look side by side on a shelf, and the very act of my mind taking in the information of the words on the page. Once I have finished a book, I feel as though a little piece of it has become mine.
New York City has some of the most beautiful parks I have ever seen. Though most would not consider me a nature girl (I am especially unhelpful at things like pitching a tent), I have many memories of visiting local parks with my Dad, and spotting armadillos, birds of prey, even tiny lizards and bugs. A picnic in the Sheep’s Meadow of Central Park is my iconic vision of a perfect day, and it lives up to the expectations every time. This summer, aside from many picnics, I plan to visit the Brooklyn Botanical Garden and revisit the Cloisters way uptown. Incidentally, park events often include blankets, food, and books.
8. Stuffed Animals.
There is a whole blog post on its way about my (intense) love for stuffed animals. Suffice it to say for now that the tiny guy you see pictured here has been with me since I was about 5 years old.
9. Music. Including: (1) soundtracking my life while walking around in the city, (2) watching musicians work their craft live and in person, and (3) singing- along to an album, with full orchestra, or anything in between.
10. Loved Ones. I never get so blue that I forget how lucky I am to be surrounded by amazing, wonderful individuals. I am constantly challenged and supported, loved and encouraged to grow by friends and family.
I'm feeling better already.
